What is Part VB and what does it cover?

Part VB of the Australian Copyright Act allows you to copy a certain amount of print and graphical works without having to seek permission from the copyright holder.

The copied work may be used in lecture notes, PowerPoint presentations, on Web sites or WebCT courses, or sent to students via email.

UWA pays an annual license fee to the Copyright Agency Ltd, which is used to compensate the copyright holders for the use of their work.

What is Part VA and what does it cover?

Part VA of the Australian Copyright Act allows you to copy audio-visual material broadcast from television (free-to-air, cable or satellite) and radio without having to seek permission from the copyright holder. The copied work may be used during lectures, embedded within PowerPoint presentations, on Web sites or WebCT courses, or sent to students via email.

UWA pays an annual license fee to Screenrights Ltd, which is used to compensate the copyright holders for the use of their work under the Part VA statutory license.

The AVCC has also entered into a commercial license on the University’s behalf which allows University staff to communicate AV recordings from certain Music Collecting Societies (AMCOS, APRA, ARIA and PPCA) for the purposes of teaching. The license does not allow staff or students to obtain a copy of the recording, effectively limiting use of the work to "live" broadcasting or streaming over the Internet. Print and graphic material is copied under the provision of Part VB of the Act.
