The UWA Library offers a permanent thesis binding service to all UWA staff and students, and operates a local digital archive of theses written by postgraduate students at UWA. This guide provides detailed information about these services.

Format of theses

Theses are expected to meet the following specifications:

Paper International A4 size (30cm x 21cm); weight at least 70gsm for the original copy
Margins Left-hand margin at least 4cm; other margins at least 2cm
Format At least one and a half line spacing; typescript or computer printout; single- or double-sided printing
Volume No more than 6cm in spine width and 2.5kg in weight
Title Page Full title of thesis; author's name; full title of degree; correct official name of the School; name of university; year of presentation
Accompanying material Accompanying material such as photographs and inserts must be securely mounted, with margins as above. There are no restrictions on size of accompanying maps, drawings, musical scores, or computer printouts, but these must be noted in the Special Instructions section on the CFV form. Indicate whether these are to be bound in or pocked at the back. Additional charges may apply
 

Specifications for permanent binding

Permanent binding is normally arranged by the Library, according to the following specifications:

Binding

  • Cased-in or plastic bound. Sewn, overcast on to tapes, if plates or inserts are present
  • Properly rounded spine; correctly formed joint (not acceptable: stab-binding, stapling)
  • Buckram, or equivalent quality binding cloth

PhD

All disciplines mustard, with light green spine

Master's & Other Doctoral

Architecture, Landscape & Visual Arts light green
Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences royal blue
Economics & Commerce maroon
Education royal blue
Engineering, Computing & Mathematics mustard
Law black
Life & Physical Sciences light green
Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences light red
Natural & Agricultural Sciences light brown

 

Lettering


Gold lettering across the spine:

  • Author's family name and initials
  • Year
  • PhD (or faculty, for Master's or other doctoral)

(if the spine is too narrow, this lettering should read sideways from bottom to top)
 
Gold lettering on the front cover:

Permanent binding for University deposit copies does not include any lettering on the front cover. If you want your name and the title of the thesis in gold lettering on the cover of your personal copy, this will cost extra. Please see Payment & Prices for more information.

 

Temporary binding


Temporary binding must be either thermal, spiral, or clamp binding, with a cover of cardboard, light card or heavy paper. This can be arranged at the Library's Copying Services office (ground floor, Reid Library Building) and at UniPrint.
