Lecture Notes and Personal Communications             Print Page

Basic Format for Referencing Information From Lecture Notes

Details to be recorded when you reference information on a web page:

Author. Title [unpublished lecture notes]. University of Western Australia; notes provided at lecture given Date of Lecture.

See below for further information about what to record in each of these elements of your reference.

Lecture Notes and Personal Communications

Personal communications – including notes you have taken during a lecture

Avoid citing a "personal communication" including notes from a lecture unless it provides essential information not available elsewhere.

If you decide to refer to a personal communication such as notes taken in a lecture, or the contents of an email, details of the communication should be provided in the text. The name of the person and date of communication should be cited in parentheses in the text. A citation number is not used and no details are included in your reference list.

For example:
The WAIMR team has identified numerous genes associated with diseases such as leukaemia, diabetes and cancer. (Professor John R Brown, lecture on research at UWA, 2009 May 10)

Important Note: Always check with your assignment marker or lecturer if it is acceptable to reference this type of material.

Lecture notes and other print material provided by lecturers during a lecture, or as course notes

If the printed material is written by the lecturer cite it in the body of your text using a superscript number in the usual way and include it in your list of references.

Example of format for your reference list:

Smith JB. Anatomy of the head and neck [unpublished lecture notes]. University of Western Australia; notes provided at lecture given 2009 May 18.

(In this example, the lecturer provided a lecture title on the notes)

OR

Smith JB. [Unpublished lecture notes on anatomy of the head and neck]. University of Western Australia; notes provided at lecture 2009 May 18..

(In this example, the lecturer did not provide a title on the notes, so you have indicated the subject of the lecture)

Important Note: Always check with your assignment marker or lecturer if it is acceptable to reference this type of material.
