Basic Terms
- Connection files
- Store the information necessary to connect to and search online databases directly from within EndNote (see more).
- Direct export
- Many databases have inbuilt filters which allow you to export references directly from the database into your Endnote library (see more).
- Filters
- Where databases do not have Direct Export available you can usually save your references as a text file and use a separate filter to import your references into your Endnote library (see more).
- Library
- An EndNote database of references; your library will have the suffix .enl (endnote library) (see more).
- Record Number
- EndNote assigns a unique record number to each reference. If a reference is deleted its number is not re-used. This number is used by EndNote to identify the reference when a word document is formatted. It is not possible for EndNote to draw from more than one library when formatting a document. For this reason you should work from only one Endnote library when using your references in a Word document. Some users maintain an interim library and only transfer references to their master library when they are sure they want to keep them.
- Reference Type
- The types of material which you are referencing. EndNote provides templates for a number of different reference types, eg. Books, journal articles, conference papers etc.
- Styles
- Reference styles (Endnote calls them output styles) display your references according to a particular style. Check with your faculty, lecturer or supervisor which style they prefer you to use. If the style is available from the UWA Library’s Reference styles page you should download it from there. Otherwise select from the output styles which come with EndNote (see more).
- Travelling Libraries
- When you insert citations from an EndNote library into a Word document you embed part of the EndNote software (the field codes) into your document. This creates a travelling library of your references attached to the Word document. You can export references from your Word document to another EndNote library so long as the version of EndNote and Word is compatible with your own.
